Edit: We’ve had some additional suggestions in the comments and I’d love more. If you’ve got any ideas, add them to the comments.
Ok, so we’re packing this weekend to make sure we’re ready whenever Melissa goes into labor and I need your help. We took a tour of our hospital room and they told us that they have a DVD player in the room. Obviously, as the guy, I need to prepare and this is a big decision that I’ve been contemplating for a while now. I’ve got to decide what DVDs to bring to this momentous occasion. There are several ways to go.
The Orange & Blue Approach: Illinois vs. Arizona ’05 – What better way for our firstborn son to enter the world? Plus, it could provide inspiration for Melissa if she gets tired and feels like giving up. Unfortunate quote to avoid: “Honey, if the Illini can come back from 15 down with four minutes to go surely you can deliver one little baby. Just try a little harder.”
The Captive Audience Approach: Usual Suspects – I’ve been trying to get Melissa to watch this movie for a while now. We tried once but she slept though it and woke up for the last 5 minutes (which is one of the all time best endings to a movie). She didn’t get it though since she hadn’t seen the movie. Unfortunate quote to avoid: “Honey, just hold off for a couple more minutes. You won’t want to miss the end of this!”
The Stupid/Crazy/Insensitive Approach: Alien – I don’t know that I’ve ever actually scene this movie all the way through but there is one scene that I definitely know about that has an unfortunate similarity to the birthing process. Most of you know what I’m talking about. If not, check out the link here or here (but beware, it is pretty graphic). Unfortunate quote to avoid: “Honey, at least you’re not that guy!”
The Creepy/Cutsie Baby Approach: Look Who’s Talking – Depending on your perspective, this could be a cute movie to get us in the baby mood or a creepy movie about oddly adult babies. Unfortunate quote to avoid: “Honey, do you think our little guy will sound like Bruce Willis too?”
The Fun/Relaxing Approach: The Office: Season 2– I can’t think of anything that Melissa enjoys relaxing to more than a few episodes of The Office and season two is obviously the best season so far. What better way to bring a child into the world than to the soothing sounds of Michael, Dwight, Pam and Jim. Unfortunate quote to avoid: “Honey, it does not matter to me at all whether this baby is biologically mine. I’m going to love it. It’s like when the dog nurses the tiger cub. Have you seen that video? It is so bizarre and unnatural, but, it… it happens.” (actual quote from season 5, episode 3) Plus, of course, any reference to “that’s what she said.”
Bethany B’s Suggested Approach: Baby Mama -You guys should rent Baby Mama. It has Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the funniest girls on SNL. It is about a single career woman (TIna Fey) who hires a surrogate (Amy Poehler)through an agency. The whole movie is hysterical! The movie traveles through the process of getting ready for a baby. It also has a lot of quotable lines. I even have an Unfortunate quote to avoid for you: “Honey, I’ll bet right about now you’re wishing we had hired a surrogate.”
How about a poll. What do you think?

I like approach Orange & Blue Approach of course. I still have never seen the full game just the last 8 minutes plus OT. I was in basic training but, I still get chills every time I think about it and the look Deron had on his face.
