Best of 2008: The Quiz

A couple of the blogs I read regularly (MarkO and Josh Treece) did this little end of year summary and I thought I’d try it.  I’m not real introspective and I don’t always have a great memory so it was a little bit of a stretch.  It was good for me though.

  1. What did you do in 2008 that you’d never done before?
    – Ummm…well my wife got pregnant.  I’d say that is a first for something I’ve done.
    – I went to a Rex Sox game and visited Harvard.
  2. Did you keep your New Year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
    – I don’t really make New Year’s resolutions.
  3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
    – Lots of people in the last few months: LeVeque’s, Miller’s, Lee’s, Dixon’s and plenty more.
  4. Did anyone close to you die?
    – Melissa’s grandfather.  I didn’t know him well but he will be missed.
  5. What countries did you visit?
    – Just Canada this year.  Last year was the international year.
  6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?
    – A baby boy!
    – I’d love to have a great new children’s and high school minister at WSCC as well.
  7. What date(s) from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
    – Father’s Day (June 15) – I found out for the first time that I’m going to be a papa!
  8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
    – If you’re not picking up on the theme yet…my wife is pregnant.
    – As far as ministry goes, highlights have been our first ever summer student leader mission trip, significantly more adult small group leaders (especially dads) and our Feed 500 Christmas outreach.
  9. Did you suffer illness or injury?
    – Not really.  I had 24 hours of vomiting which is rare for me, but nothing beyond that.
  10. What was the best thing you bought?
    – Melissa had a car accident so we had to buy a new car and it has been great.  I think my favorite purchase though was our new desk from Ikea.  Finally all of my tech can be put away even while it is still hooked up.
  11. Whose behavior merited celebration?
    – This is phrased kind of funny.  We’ve got some awesome leaders.  Dawn Oettel in particular has stepped up huge for our Jr. High girls and their leaders.
    – Kyle Alt & Ruby Scherpinsky did a great job stepping up to help cover the loss of our H.S. minister.
    – My AWESOME wife.  Not only is she carrying my baby boy, she also took on a huge new staff role at church and is still a domestic goddess.  She certainly “merits celebration”.
  12. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
    – Some politicians certainly disappointed.
    – There were some other disappointing moments but probably not ones to go into here.
  13. Where did most of your money go?
    – Savings, Charitable Giving and Mortgage.  Some went to baby stuff but I’m sure it’s nothing compared to the year ahead.
  14. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
    – If you haven’t heard, we’re having a baby.  Also, it is a boy!
  15. What song will always remind you of 2008?
    – Hmm…I’m not really that into music.  But I suppose I’ll always think of 2008 when I hear Last Christmas.
  16. Compared to this time last year, are you:
Wiser? – I sure hope so.  I feel like I’ve grown and learned a lot, especially in terms of leading and managing people.  Definitely still plenty to learn but I feel at least a little wiser.
Healthier? – Can’t say I am particularly healthier.  I haven’t gained or lost more than a couple pounds in like 10 years.  Still in pretty good shape but the only chance since last year is that I’m a year older.
Richer? – In pretty much every way I can think of, yes.
  17. What do you wish you’d done more of?
    – Spent time with students
  18. What do you wish you’d done less of?
    – hmmm…watched TV.  On a deeper level, I wish I’d thought a little less about what myself and what I want to do with “my” time and energy.
  19.  How did you spend Christmas?
    – Three Christmas Eve services at church, murder mystery with Sandel family, Christmas AM with in-laws, lunch and games with both families and Christmas night just Melissa and I.
  20. Did you fall in love in 2008?
    – Every day with my beautiful wife.  And I’m already falling in love with my boy and haven’t fully met him yet.
  21. What was your favorite blog post that you wrote?
    – See my previous post.  If I had to pick an overall, un-baby related post, I might say Office Life: A Day in Scranton.
  22. What were your favorite TV programs?
Overall favorite still has to be The OfficeLost & Heroeswere pretty great too though.  Melissa and I have also rewatched West Wing together.  I’m pretty sure that was the best show ever made.
  23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
    – Umm…I can’t think of anyone I’ve ever said I hate.
  24. What was the best book you read?
    Revolutionary Parenting
  25. What was your greatest musical discovery?
    – Musical discovery?  What does that even mean?
  26. What did you want and get?
    – A baby boy (or at least one on the way).
  27. What did you want and not get?
    – I new high school and elementary minister would have been nice.  But it’s definitely better to wait and find the right people so I guess I’m glad we’ve waited.
  28. What was your favorite film of this year?
    – Ouch, that is rough.  There isn’t a standout #1.  A lot of people are saying Dark Knight.  I like it but I’m not sure I’m ready to put it as the best.
  29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
    – I turned 28 a few weeks ago.  I lead our Jr. High small group Christmas party.  After that Melissa had a great meal prepared for me and we played a game together.  It was actually a really nice night.
  30. Which celebrity/public figure did you like the most?
    – The biggest story was certainly Obama.  There is a lot to like about him.  Certainly some uncertainly but I hope for great things for our first African-American president.
  31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?
    – I can’t imagine I’ve ever actually had a fashion concept.  I did however decide that I’m starting to be old enough as a student minister that I should start trying to have a few “cooler” clothes.  I now have some cool jeans and a couple of more trendy shirts…at least compared to my normal dorky attire.
  32. What kept you sane?
    – Why on earth would I want to stay sane?  Where’s the fun in that?  (Seriously though, I’ve got an ultra consistent personality so I guess I tend to stay pretty sane overall.)
  33. Who did you miss?
    – John Luzadder, our former High School minister, is certainly missed.  There are others but he’s who came to mind immediately.
  34. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008.
    – There was a stretch of a few days when we had some questions and were waiting on some tests about our baby.  That was 10 days that really taught us both to rely on God and trust him, no matter what.  It is so easy to think that we’ve got everything under control ourselves until something like that to remind us that we’re all really in His hands.
  35. What did you gain this year?
    – I don’t really have a response to this but I got a kick out of what Melissa said, “35 pounds.”
  36. What did you lose this year?
    – Track of time…I’ve got to get to bed.
  37. Who was the best new person you met?
    – Weird question.  A couple of our new hires this year are cool.  Gabe’s been on staff since August and he and his family are pretty cool.  Not sure I’m going to call anyone the “best” though.
  38. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
    – Yeah, I guess I’m lame but I really don’t listen to enough music for this.
