The Importance of Balance

I just saw this story.  Mandy Sellars was born with rare condition that caused her legs and feet to grow rapidly while the rest of her body grew normally.  She is now 33 years old and weights 285 pounds but only 70-80 of those pounds are from her upper body.  When she was young the problem wasn’t so obvious but as she has aged and her body has continued to get out of balance it has severely hampered her life.  She stopped going to the park because she was being ridiculed.  Common household tasks became major chores.  Doctors have said that she may one day have to have her legs amputated if the growth continues.

Her story is sad and pretty incredible but as I think about it I can’t help but think about some of the other ways that our lives get out of balance.  It is easy for my ministry to focus too much on discipleship and miss out on evangelism or visa versa.  At home I struggle to balance personal life with work that still needs to be done.  In relationships I have to balance time with Melissa, time with close friends and time meeting new people who are looking to get plugged in.  If I allow any of them to get too far out of balance, it can cause serious damage.
