This is a pretty sweat little interactive map on the NY Time website. You just drag the date slider at the top of the screen and as you do it gives you a visual representation of the medal count from each country in the games. I found it interesting to see that from 1952-1976 the US and Russia remain pretty equal in size. Then came the 1980 games in Moscow where the US is gone and most of the medals went to communist countries. Move forward one more games to the 1984 Olympics in L.A. and the US becomes huge and Russia disappears. I knew that there were some boycotts but it was interesting to see how that affected both those countries and all of the others that were associated with them (Democratic vs. Communist).
Anyway, it is a fun little thing to checkout if you’ve got 3 minutes sometime. (neatorama)
