An Eventful Night

I am usually a pretty heavy sleeper.  It takes me 5 minutes or less to fall asleep and I usually sleep all the way through the night.  Living on the edge of a subdivision that sits on the edge of town we can get some pretty high winds hitting our house and during storms they’ve occasionally woken me up.  Last night though we had a first.  Just before 5AM Melissa and I both woke up to some shaking.  At first I thought it was just wind but it was somehow different.  It crossed my mind that it could be an earthquake but that isn’t exactly what you’d expect in Illinios.  Since no walls were falling down I just went back to bed.

This morning I didn’t think a thing about it until I hopped online and saw a CNN headline about an earthquake in the midwest.  Apparently there was a 5.2 earthquake this morning just a few hours from Springfield.  I told Melissa about it and she said she just thought it was dream.  Apparently not.

There was a 4.5 aftershock just a few minutes ago.  I didn’t actually feel it this time but Melissa said things were shaking all over.  Apparently I just have mad balancing skills because I felt nothing while I was walking around the house.

Anybody else have earthquake stories to share?  If you live around here, did you feel it?  Have you been in others?

This is a video from an Evansville, IN (I have family down there) news station that was airing during the quake.  If you want to see some of the coverage from Springfield, there is some low quality stuff up here on YouTube.

  1. I am so bummed I missed the earthquake!!

  2. I didn’t miss it :o) I have a ciffarobe (closet like dresser) right next to my bed and I woke up to it “walking” across my hardwood floor…to tell the truth at first I thought it was a burgler and then I thought it was a tornado, b/c with our house up on this hill even a little wind makes the walls rattle…yep it was crazy but fun :o)
