American Idol – Speech Contest Edition

This afternoon I judged a speech contest for the 7-8th grade students at SCS (the school that meets in our church).  Halfway through the contest Donna, the school principal, leaned over to me and told me that she was Paula, John Luazadder was Randy and that made me Simon.  I don’t know that I was mean enough to pull off Simon but I actually had a good time hearing what the kids had to say.

The topic was great American landmarks so we heard a lot about Mt. Rushmore and the Statue of Liberty but everybody had new fun facts.  One of the boys from our student leadership team who is a Cubs fan talked about Wrigley Field, which didn’t do him any favors with me (I think I was pretty impartial though).  One girl who I didn’t know very well though cracked me up.  She did a great presentation on what could only loosely be called an American landmark.  She was funny, engaging and very compelling though.  After her 3-4 minute speech I want to go visit.  I’m betting you’ll never guess what “landmark” she chose.  Hit the link to visit their website and find out more.

So, do you think that qualifies as a great American landmark?

  1. She got everybody in our class laughing. She’s such a natural speaker. She really had no reason to be nervous, it was a Great speach… I’m glad you liked it,too.
PS. Mrs. Chambers will always be Paula…. she’s always been so nice. But, I can’t picture you as Simon.
