I saw Juno tonight with some friends.  I heard good things about it before hand and it didn’t disappoint.  It was very funny but it dealt with many of the real life issues that come with teen pregnancy.  Watching the preview before hand I thought it looked like a combination of Napoleon Dynamite and Thirteen.  After seeing it, I still think that is a fairly good summation.

I don’t know that I would recommend it for my Jr. High students overall (it is PG-13 and, considering the subject matter, definitely contains many sexual references) even though many of them will probably already have seen it.  However, for parents wanting to have a real conversation with their children about teen pregnancy and the real life choices that come with it, this would be a great movie to see together.

While I haven’t had to deal directly with teen pregnany specifically, I thought it was a fairly accurate, though slightly exagerated and optimistic, portrayal of teen life.  It really is a must see for anyone who works with teenagers…or anyone who likes funny movies that are also able to hit home and make you think.

(When I got home I also saw that it is up for Best Picture.  Who would have thought that any movie with any similarities to Napoleon Dynamite would ever be up for something as serious as an Oscar!)

  1. 🙂 I totally agree. This is one I think I will definately see again when it comes out on video.
