Video Game Wedding

July 21, 2008

My very good friends Josh and Bethany got married last week.  The only reason I haven’t blogged about yet is that I was away for the few weeks leading directly up to the wedding and I’m just now getting back into the swing of things.

They are great friends who Melissa and I have known since college.  I was the best man at the wedding and Melissa was the matron of honor and it was pretty neat to have such close friends (who we knew long before they ever considered dating) end up getting married and for us to be able to share the day with them.  I still remember when Josh told me he’d had a crush on Bethany for a while and how excited we were to see them get together.  I can’t wait to spend many more years of married friendship with them.

Since I don’t often end a blog post without tying in something weird or funny I leave you with this cool wedding cake that I’m sure Josh would have loved, had he known about it before the wedding.  It is a Mario wedding cake (more pics at flickr, via neatorama) and seeing as he is one of the biggest Nintendo fans I know, I couldn’t help but think of him when I saw it.  (The more recent example of his passion for old school video games… when picking up reading for their honeymoon travels Bethany got Real Simple while Josh got the 20th anniversary edition of Nintendo Power.)

International Flavor

July 21, 2008

In college I took a mission trip down to Bogota, Colombia.  It was a great trip (though not as great for Melissa, you can ask her about it sometime) and I got to experience some really cool things and find out a lot about the politics of a country other than the US and how the US is sometimes seen internationally.

We were there for a couple of weeks and while we were there we were served pizza several times.  Only it wasn’t exactly what we’d think of when we think of pizza here.  Almost none of it had meat on it.  The main topping choices were fruit.  They had just about every kind of fruit on the pizza.  The supreme would have been something like: banana, mango, pineapple and papaya, with a little pepperoni mixed in if you’re lucky.  It looked just like regular pizza (cheese, tomato sauce, etc) but much more fruity.

I thought all of that was weird until I ran across a couple of recent blog entries (rue the day, slice) that made me realize that fruit is nothing compared to what some countries do to their pizza.  A couple that I thought were particularly extreme were:

  • Japan – They love squid and Mayo Jaga (a combination of mayonnaise, potatoes and bacon). The “Mega Pizza” is loaded with toppings and is served with maple syrup and ketchup on top.
  • Russia -Mockba (a blend of sardines, tuna, salmon, mackerel and onions) is a popular pizza topper…sorry, but I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. Also, red herring is quite a popular topping.
  • South Korea – They’ve come up with the tasty treat below.  Shrimp popper bites baked into the crust.  Mmmm…  (For more commercials featuring crazy crusts and toppings, check out the slice blog.)
