Leatherheads

April 11, 2008

This afternoon in St. Louis we went to see the new movie Leatherheads.  It’s got some great actors in it.  I usually enjoy George Clooney and Renee Zellweger who I thought were both great choices for their roles.  Plus it was fun seeing John Krasinski (Jim from The Office) in such a promient role.

For those of you who don’t know, it is a screwball comedy loosely based on the formation of professional football.  When I was in school I did a project on Red Grange and it seemed a lot (in some ways) like his story.  When he finished his last college game he signed a contract to play a 19 game tour for a “share of gate receipts that amounted to $100,000, during an era when typical league salaries were less than $100/game.  That 67-day tour is credited with legitimizing professional football in the United States.”

As far as the movie goes, overall I really enjoyed it.  It certainly wasn’t the best movie ever but I laughed a lot and both Melissa and I had a good time.

(Now for more of John Krasinski.  We’re getting ready to watch the new episode of The Office right now!)

Potential Jesus Junk

April 11, 2008

I’ve mentioned Marko’s blog here before.  Every once in a while he’ll give an award for what he calls Jesus Junk.  Basically it is any kind of tacky trinket that people may try to sell by putting the likeness of our Savior on it.

Along those lines, I think I’m going to have to award my first ever Jesus Junk away to this plan for a “religious lamp.”  Whether or not it has ever been made is not known but someone does officially hold the patent.  A light up Jesus with a moving head and pumping blood.  Yikes!

For this and many more crazy (and stupid) real-life patents, check out PatentlySilly.com.

Creature Comforts: Self Image

April 11, 2008

This video is awesome!  With a topic like self image I’ve got to be able to find a way to use this in youth ministry (or at least part of it).  I had never heard of Creature Comforts before but apparently it is a series of short films that were put together using real live interviews from people.  They then go in and animate them using animals.  It is a little longer but I laughed all the way through.  Enjoy!

Fat Don’s for Grown-Ups

April 11, 2008

In college I used to tag along with Melissa to have dinner at the University of Illinos dining halls.  Once a week one of the dorms hosted a specialty resturant called Fat Don’s.  I only got to go a few times but it really was one of the most incredible displays of American over indulgance that I’ve ever seen (but man was it good).  They had piles upon piles of steaks and chicken breasts and, as always at the dorms, it was all you can eat.  I would go through the line and grab three big steaks, a chicken breast and a loaded baked potato (to make sure I was getting my veggies).  Anywhere that you get all you can eat meat is great in my book.

Last night Melissa and I went down to St. Louis for the night to hang out and celebrate her new job (which I just realized that I haven’t posted about yet…I’ll have to do that).  We wanted to do something new and fun so we decided to go to a Brazilian restaurant.  We had heard about them before and thought it would be fun to try.  Essentially it is Fat Don’s for grown-ups.  The menu is simple…everything is all you can eat.  They had a salad bar (not much use to me), hot bar and all you can eat meat.  At the beginning of the night they give your table a little card and as long as it is flipped up they keep the meat coming.  We had like 5-6 different kinds of beef plus some chicken and shimp.  For a guy who is essentially an anti-vegitarian it is tough to beat.
